What is a Skin Peel?

Chemical peels, also known as skin peels, are a non-surgical method of exfoliating the top layer of your skin to reveal skin that’s more smooth and youthful in appearance. The peels are commonly done on the face, neck, and hands and range from mild, superficial peels to more deep treatments. Depending on the desired effect, anything from alpha-hydroxy acid to trichloroacetic acid may be used. Skin peels are used to treat a variety of conditions, including:

  • Scarring from acne
  • Crow’s feet
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Sun spots
  • Pigmentation issues such as hyperpigmentation and melasma

If you’re curious about whether or not a skin peel can help a condition that’s not listed above, contact MD Beautify! We’ll gladly answer any questions you have.

How Do I Prepare?

This will largely depend on the specific condition you’re hoping to remedy with the peel. Some people benefit from pre-treatment schedules that incorporate various agents to stimulate skin cells and boost collagen synthesis. Depending on your customized treatment, your aesthetician will direct you accordingly.

Do Skin Peels Hurt?

Generally speaking, chemical peels will sting a bit. The stronger the acid used, the more discomfort it will cause. However, skin peels are far less painful than surgical treatments.

Are There Any Side Effects?

Side effects will vary depending on your specific peel. However, many people experience redness, irritation, swelling, and slight scabbing as the skin heals and recovers. Your physician may prescribe medicines, creams, or gels to assist with any post-treatment side effects.

Is There Any Down Time?

For mild skin peels, there is minimal to no down time. If you’re planning on a medium-depth peel, you’ll need to keep your skin protected and clean for approximately one week. For deeper peels, the recovery period is longer.

Who Should Not Get a Chemical Peel?

Chemical peels may not be best for everyone. They tend to work best on those with fair complexions and are not recommended for those clients who:

  • Are pregnant or nursing children
  • Have been on Accutane in the last six months
  • Have used prescription skin care products, lightening agents, or acid-based products within 48 hours
  • Suffer from skin conditions such as eczema, rosacea, psoriasis, or dermatitis
  • Have any kind of active infection or skin disease

If you have a skin condition or have been on a skin medication not listed above, please consult with your doctor about the safety of getting a chemical peel treatment.

What is Botox?

Approved for cosmetic use in more than 75 countries, Botox is an injectable serum partially manufactured out of varying formulations and potencies of a highly-purified toxin protein derived from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. It has been thoroughly tested and has gone through stringent clinical trials to ensure its safety. It provides temporary improvement of fine lines and wrinkles, including deep frown lines and crow’s feet.

Is Botox Safe?

The effectiveness and safety of Botox has been extensively tested. When treatments are provided by certified Botox providers, patients should rest assured that the treatment is safe.

What About Painful Side Effects?

Your beautician may choose to numb the injection site ahead of time to reduce any chance of pain. At most, you’ll likely feel a pinching or pricking sensation. There is a possible risk of side effects, including, but not limited to, eyelid drooping, swelling, pain at injection site, headache, neck pain, vision problems and allergic reactions. For full disclosure, speak with your practitioner about potential side effects.

How Does Botox Work?

Those crow’s feet and frown lines are the result of repetitive muscle contractions from years of frowning, squinting, and smiling. When Botox is injected into these muscles, they temporarily relax and contractions are reduced. The result is a smoothing of unsightly crow’s feet and frown lines. Generally, patients start to see a difference within 24 to 48 hours of treatment.

How Long Will my Treatment Take?

The treatment itself will take approximately 10 to 15 minutes. However, you should plan on at least an hour visit to ensure you understand the procedure, its possible side effects, have the opportunity to discuss your treatment goals and options with your physician, and have a facial assessment completed.

How Long Will the Results Last?

Every patient is different, however, many patients experience long-lasting results for three to four months after treatment.

Is There a Recovery Period with Botox?

The wonderful thing about Botox is how convenient it is! After your treatment is complete, you can return to your usual routine with minimal downtime. Your physician will discuss any special care instructions following your injection.

Whether you’ve got mild, moderate, or severe lines and wrinkles, there’s a good chance you could benefit from the results of Botox!
